Clara Shin lives for pranks and disruption. When she takes one joke too far, her dad sentences her to a summer working on his food truck, the KoBra, alongside her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn’t so bad. Maybe the boy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) crushing on her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in her dad’s business. What if taking this summer seriously means that Clara has to leave her old self behind?
With Maurene Goo’s signature warmth and humor, The Way You Make Me Feel is a relatable story of falling in love and finding yourself in the places you’d never thought to look.

The Way You Make Me Feel tells the story of Clara who is a prankster. She is humorous, funny but at some point childish. She and Rose (their school student body president) receive punishment because of an incident in school that will tatter her dreams to see her mother in Tulum. Their parents decided that they work at KoBra, a food truck owned by Adrian (Clara’s father), as their punishment. They meet Hamlet, a cute Chinese guy, who works at a café.
Clara behave the way she behaves because unconsciously she needs attention. Something happened between her and Rose that triggered Clara to target Rose every time. She is also friends with Patrick and Felix that supports her and help her executes every prank that she has in her hands. But I pity Clara because her behavior is influence of her family background. She lives with her father, Adrian, after her mother left them to pursue her career and dreams. Although there is an absent mother figure, Clara meet her mother from time to time to bond.
Julianna Choi, Clara’s mother, is a social media influencer, tastemaker and model, that you would want her job at some point. She gets to travel all around the world to try all the newest and finest products. Although this book does not highlight Clara’s mother work and only gives a glimpse, I realized that it is not a fulfilling career with unsatisfying life. Yes, being a tastemaker will give you all privileges but all those things are not real. Behind-the-scenes a tastemaker is lonely, sad and longing for acceptance. That is why they post photos and videos on social media to gain acceptance. While reading this book, it hit me because I dreamt of having the same job. However, I’d rather have a simple and satisfying job than being a tastemaker.
Moreover, I love Rose in the story. She is the friend we need in our life. Adrian, Rose and Hamlet helps Clara see and feel real things. Her other friends, Patrick and Felix, even her mother, keeps her from the reality. They make Clara’s life so simple, easy, close-minded and insensitive to things and other people. Further, how Clara matures and see things in different perspectives after she works with Rose and father, and meet Hamlet is noteworthy.
The Way You Make Me Feel does not only focus on Clara’s romantic relationship but also in life. I’m happy that this book expand the plot in friendship and family relationship. It added spice to the story. The character development is good. It is also in a good pace and a page-turner. This book made me want to read all Maurene Goo’s novels.
The Way You Make Me Feel is a light read with “kilig” moments but also it will give you different and deeper life perspective.
P.S. Clara’s father, Adrian, is way too cool and a hot dad! I have to admit that I’m swooned with Adrian than Hamlet.
P.P.S. I’m a sucker of Filipino or Philippines mentioned in books. And this book made my eyes sparkles so many times.
“I know I apologize a lot. But maybe it’s not a bad thing. Maybe it’s considered a bad thing because it’s something girls do a lot. Maybe it’s actually something nice that keeps the world humane. It’s a gesture.”
“Boring people exist at every age”
“No one’s family is normal.”
“It was strange to know someone for so many years and not know them at all”
“That’s the thing about having new friends—everything you like and do feels fresh again.”
“…one human being cannot exemplify all the good things in the world.”
“Sometimes, I can’t . . . live in the moment. I’m always thinking of what-ifs and the terrible things people could be thinking about me.”
“Here’s the thing: when you act confident, even when you’re nervous, people relax and stop scrutinizing you.”
“It’s easy not to be disappointed when you’re always wading in the shallow end of feelings.”
“The risk of the bad stuff was so worth the good stuff. People who would be there for you even when you messed up and behaved like a little jerk? They were the good stuff.”
